What You Should Know About Toll Roads in South Africa

If you were looking for the tollroads calculator, we unfortunately had to remove it since Google started charging a rather large amount of money for using Google Maps. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused.

Why have toll roads fees in South Africa?

Toll road fees are used as a continuous revenue stream and means that there will always be funds to insure that the national roads you travel on are optimally maintained. After a while, the condition of the road deteriorates due to high volumes of traffic and weather conditions, therefore continuous maintenance is necessary for the safety of all commuters in South Africa.

Furthermore, toll roads fees make provision for the following:

  • The effective drainage of rainwater
  • The sealing of cracks and potholes
  • The cutting of grass on either side of the road or on islands in the middle of the road, which may cause veld fires or reduce visibility
  • The Maintenance of  and additional signage on the road
  • The cleaning of debris caused by unfortunate road accidents
  • The resurfacing of the road on a regular basis
  • The adding of additional lanes where required
