Absa Cape Epic 2011

The greatest annual mountain bike stage event, The ABSA Cape Epic, will take place in Western Cape from the 27th of March to 3rd of April 2011 in Western Cape. This year sees the event take place in Tokai Forest for the first time, a great location for spectating.

Absa Cape Epic 2011

Absa Cape Epic preparations began in 2002 and in 2003 the first trial route was completed successfully. Since then the event has won various awards and is now the largest and most prestigious full-service mountain bike stage race event on earth, gathering riders from all over the world. The Cape Epic is divided into four categories, Men, Ladies, Mixed and Masters and all contestants are in teams of two. The maximum number of participants is 1200 (600 teams).

The race lasts for eight days and the trail has eight stages. The trail changes every year, with the focus on creating an unforgettable experience, the trails are always accompanied by beautiful landscapes, part of the attraction of this event. This year the route is from Tokai to Lourensford and consists of 707 km including 14500 metres of climbing. During the event, the cyclist will have tented accommodation with all necessary facilities and if they’re able to stay awake past dinner various types of entertainment are provided each night.

The race will definitely be a memorable adventure, though carries a hefty price tag. Entry cost is R35.400 per team. However, if you would like try it out without the paying so much, you can attend the annual one-day mountain bike race, Vigne á Vigne, which takes place the last day of the Cape Epic race. Thereby you can get a taste of the original race and feel the excitement from the Cape Epic as the riders cross the finish line.
