Walvis Bay is a port town in Namibia on the Atlantic Ocean coastline in Southern Africa. The town is located 30 km away from Swakopmund and 395 km from Windhoek. Walvis Bay home to Namibia’s main harbour which is visited by fishing boats, cargo vessels and cruise liners. Walvis Bay is the Afrikaans word for Whale Bay. Walvis used to be a Dutch colony until 1795 when the British took over, then in 1910 it became part of South Africa, only to be returned to namibia in 1994.

Aside from the harbour Walvis Bay has a booming fishing industry and its major drawcard is a natural lagoon which has an abundance of bird species.
