Places you can’t miss during your Garden Route road trip

There are so many beautiful places to discover in South Africa and the Garden Route in the southeastern part of South Africa is definitely one of the best. Did you know that the name of the garden route came from the verdant and ecologically diverse vegetation, and coupled with the numerous lagoons and lakes along the coast it makes for a breathtaking experience. Below are just some of the majestic towns and cities you’ll find along the way.

Knysna

One of the places you have to visit is Knysna. Knysna is also known as one of the best holiday destinations of the Southern Cape coast. Because you can find Knysna between lush forests and the shores of the breathtaking lagoon, it offers many activities and attractions. Knysna provides a blend of both relaxation and adventure allowing you to sunbathe on the white sands of Buffels Bay, visit Monkeyland with the children, or even drive through the Garden Route National Park all in a day.

Thinking of renting a car for your road trip? Hire a car in Cape Town to accommodate your travel.

Oudtshoorn

Oudtshoorn is known for two big attractions, the ostriches and the Cango Caves. Oudtshoorn, “the ostrich capital of the world”, is home to more than 200.000 ostriches. You can watch, touch and even ride an ostrich while visiting one of the many farms around.

29km from Oudtshoorn, you will find the Cango Caves, a spectacular underground wonder of the Klein Karoo. The Cango Caves are sculptured by nature through the ages, this makes the caves one of the world’s great natural wonders.

It will be tough to get a car to rent in Oudtshoorn directly so rent a car in Cape Town or rent a car in Knysna and do the drive from there.

Tsitsikamma National Park

Bungee jumping, canopy tours, hiking trails and many more, Tsitsikamma National Park offers a lot of adventures activities. Tsitsikamma is known as the garden of the Garden Route, as the area is covered in a beautiful breathtaking lush forest. You can admire the spectacular waterfalls and deep kloofs while hiking or having a quick picnic. So many options.

You won’t be able to get a car at the Tsitsikamma National Park so rent a car in Cape Town or rent a car in Knysna and do the drive from there.

A Big Five Safari

During your road trip, you will pass a lot of private game reserves, the perfect place to see some wildlife during a game drive safari. The myth that you only see wildlife in the north has been truly busted. When you are doing a game drive safari, you will enjoy the amazing views of the landscape from the jeep and somewhere in the distance, a few zebras are grazing mere metres away from you and your fellow travellers. The aim though is always to try to spot the Big Five.
