Exploring the outdoors in the Cape Winelands

A visit to the Western Cape is not complete without a visit to the Cape Winelands.

Why not rent a vehicle through Drive South Africa and go out to explore. When visiting the area, not only are you spoiled with amazing landscapes and century-old architecture, you get to taste some world-class wines.  Stellenbosch is one of the more popular routes and with good reason as it boasts nearly 200 wine and grape producers.

Should you like to explore the vineyards a little more than just enjoying a wine tasting, you have come to the right spot. Adventure Shop has several activities you can enjoy!

Stellenbosch Tours

For first time visitors, a great option to explore the Cape Winelands would be to book a private wine tour. This way, you would have a little more flexibility regarding timing and which estates you would like to visit. You can focus more on the wine estates that produce your preferred wines.

Should this be your second or third visit and you know your way around the estates, the Vine Hopper is a great option. There are three different routes for the Vine Hopper, and you can decide at which estates you would like to stop and for how long. No need for a designated driver, as you just hop on and hop off the bus when you pass your preferred stop.

If you want to get a little closer to nature, there is a fantastic guided hike through the Vineyards. You hike through the beautiful wine farms in the Banhoek Valley between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Your guide will tell you more about winemaking and flora and fauna in the area and general life on the wine estate. Two wine tastings and lunch is also included in your hike.

While in the area, why not also learn a little more about the town of Stellenbosch. You have the opportunity to depart on a historical walking tour of the town.  Popular stops would include Dorp Street, The Braak and the Stellenbosch University.

Cycle Tours

For the more adventurous visitors, there are plenty of options to choose from. If you would like to explore at your own pace, you can rent bicycles from Adventure Shop. You can explore the town or head to the mountains and enjoy some of the many fantastic trails in the Stellenbosch Mountains or the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve.  Kiddies bicycles are also available to rent.

If you are still finding your feet in the area, you can also book a guided bike tour. The tour would include a ride through the town and includes a stop or two at a wine estate before heading back to the town through the famous Stellenbosch University.

Other Adventures

Suppose you have a little more time in the area and would like to explore beyond the typical wine tastings. There are options for Quad Biking on the breathtaking Rhebokskloof Wine Estate – led by an experienced guide with different routes to choose from. Horse riding is also on the cards, and again different routes are available, half-day trails are available which include wine-tasting.
