Explore Rooisand Nature Reserve in search of the wild horses

It’s not as easy as it sounds. These are wild horses and therefore constantly on the move. Steeped in myth and urban legend a herd of wild horses inhabit the nature reserve between the Botriver lagoon and Fisherhaven. The herd split some years ago and now roam between Fisherhaven and the Rooisand Nature Reserve. There is also a bird hide here and flamingos and pelicans are frequently sighted.

The Botrivier Hotel and The Shuntin Shed

This sleepy small town and surrounds offers award-winning wineries, a hotel steeped in history and a pub not to be missed with all its character and charm, especially the locals who frequent it. Built-in 1920 it’s like stepping back in time. A great spot to enjoy a drink and watch the world go by, ever so slowly. The Shunting Shed is a diner on the tracks of a still operational railway line. Offering thin based pizzas and burgers and filled with historical artefacts. Seating is traditional train carriage seats and crockery that dates back to “days of yore” when fine dining on SA Railways was a norm. Quirky, filled with character and great views and food. Well worth a visit.

Visit the Elgin Station Railway Market 

This converted apple warehouse is now a steampunk railway side station market bustling with vendors, patrons, incredible architecture and good vibes. The art deco and Victorian theme combination are incredible, it’s like stepping into Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Loads of food & beverage options and traders selling their wares along with living music make this a very popular stop for all to visit over weekends.
