Thrifty Car Rental was founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1958 and built its name on a straightforward idea: good cars at honest prices. In 1981, the company was bought by Bill Lobeck and his business partners. It listed on the stock exchange in 1987 and was acquired by the Chrysler Corporation in 1989, where it joined Dollar Rent A Car. The two brands became Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, which was spun off as a separate company in 1997. In 2012, The Hertz Corporation acquired the group, so Thrifty now sits alongside Hertz and Dollar as one of three brands under the Hertz umbrella.
Thrifty is made for budget-conscious travellers who still expect a well-kept car and a quick airport handover. Pick up your vehicle when you land and set off straight away: explore Cape Town and the Winelands, take a coastal road trip, or drive into the bushveld on a self-drive holiday in South Africa. With the backing of one of the world’s largest car hire groups, Thrifty gives you international peace of mind at a sensible price.
