The all-new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ VX brings the legendary Land Cruiser name to a compact, go-anywhere 4x4, and it’s built for exactly the trip most of our travellers dream of: a self-drive safari from lodge to lodge across South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.
There’s no rooftop tent or camping kit, because you won’t need it. You’ll be sleeping in lodges and guesthouses, so you get a lighter, nimbler vehicle that’s easier to drive and park, with the touring essentials already fitted. A 20-litre Dometic fridge in the boot runs off a dual battery system, keeping drinks and picnic supplies cold on long gravel stretches and between game drives. A Front Runner roof rack takes care of extra luggage.

Distances in Namibia and Botswana are long and fuel stops are few, so the FJ carries 110 litres of fuel across two tanks (60 L main, 50 L secondary). The 2.7-litre petrol engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, so there’s no manual gear changing on the left-hand side of an unfamiliar road, and part-time four-wheel drive with low range and rear diff lock gets you through sand, mud and rough tracks when the tar runs out. Inside, the VX adds leather trim, dual-zone climate control, push-button start and a reversing camera with park distance control.
Picture it: the Garden Route, Sossusvlei’s dunes, the Okavango Delta, the Cape Winelands, with a comfortable lodge waiting at the end of every day.
