Leopards in the Kruger National Park, South Africa.

What You Can Experience in Johannesburg & Pretoria on Your Next Holiday

Johannesburg is the vibrant heart of South Africa and Pretoria is the Administrative Capital and together they form the multi-cultural, multi-lingual powerhouse of Africa. They sizzle with energy and enthusiasm, from squatter camps in Soweto to world-class hotels in Sandton. This is also the jump-off point to many of the biggest and best Game Reserves in the world.

Safaris in Johannesburg

Kruger National Park is one of the world’s most popular safari destinations. It’s home to the Big Five, as well as all of Southern Africa’s most well-known animals, and hundreds of species of birds. There are 21 main rest camps offering self-catering bungalows, cottages and camping, plus a number of privately-run lodges and bushveld camps.

Most visitors to Kruger are hoping to see the Big Five, which are in their highest concentrations in the south of the park. This makes the south more crowded, but if you only have limited time then this is definitely the region to head for.

Wildlife sightings are less frequent in the north, but you’re much more likely to have them – and the vast, beautiful landscapes – all to yourself. Every camp has its charm, but Olifants Rest Camp deserves special mention for its fantastic views of the Olifants River, and don’t miss Letaba Rest Camp’s fascinating elephant museum.

Kruger is a year-round destination, although the dry winter months are considered best for wildlife viewing because the vegetation is thinnest and the animals tend to congregate around the more permanent water sources. There are nine entrance gates and gate times change with the seasons so be careful to check before you travel. The roads inside the park are suitable for any type of vehicle, but note that vehicles with higher ground clearance provide a better vantage for game spotting. There is no time limit on enjoying Kruger. Day trips, especially in the southern region, can result in some great sightings. If possible, however, try and spend at least a week and see both the north and south of the park to experience the full range of landscapes and wildlife on offer.
