Best 4x4 self-drive holiday via Cape Town

4×4 in Africa, Specifically Southern Africa is a dream for most and a bucket list for many. It is often a long holiday and can be expensive. So when you finally get the chance to go you want to make the most of it! So you will start in Cape Town! But where to from there? 

What to see in Cape Town?

Lets first cover what you need to see while you are in Cape Town. Table Mountain, Cape Point, Boulders Beach, and the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront are the top places to see. 

But other places to check out are the Franschhoek wine valley, Chapmans Peak Drive, and Camps Bay. There is so much to see you will have to come back for a second visit! After 22 years of being in Cape Town, I am still not bored!

Hire a small car or use the City Site-Seeing bus to get around in ease.

Where to go from Cape Town?

Now you have the 4×4, so where do you go. Follow the N1 and then turn onto the N7 Cape – Namibia Route! This route, as its name suggests, will take you along the West Coast to Namibia! 

The route can take you to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the Richtersveld, and the west coast dunes! Then onto Namibia, you go!

Why Namibia?

Namibia is so fast it would be hard to list all the reasons and places to see! But here are a few:

Luderitz

A small German Coastal town in Namibia! This small harbour town lies on one of the least hospitable coasts in Africa. The town is known for its colonial architecture and its dune surroundings. It also boasts an array of wildlife including flamingos, Seals, Penguins, and Ostrich. 

Skeleton Coast

Described as “The Land God made in Anger” and “The Gates to Hell”, you may wonder why I have put this on the list. It may be inhospitable, with less than 10mm of rain per year, but it is breathtaking. As far as you can see is dunes, and the beaches are barren, except for the Seals and their predators. 

Though hard to describe, there is unprecedented beauty in the bare bones of the earth that is Skeleton Coast.

The Salt Pans

The Salt Pans are home to some of the rarest and most memorable wildlife sightings in the world. Most of the year it is dry, with a short period of rain and green vegetation. Animals manage to survive. From Herds of Elephants to Lions, Leopards, and even Black and White Rhinos. As well as many rare animals such as Cape Fox, Brown Hyena, Aardwolf, and much more. It also offers excellent 4×4 tracks to test out your skills.

With so many places to visit, it can be hard to choose! But Namibia is a great place to go when starting in Cape Town. You can start with the Wine and end with the Wildlife! Most travellers opt for booking a vehicle with Drive South Africa to accommodate their travel plans.
