3D Secure Explained

What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure is a method of authentication security created by the Visa and Mastercard Associations to strengthen the security of online transactions for all cardholders. It’s also known as Verified by Visa, MasterCard SecureCode or Amex Safekey.

How does 3D Secure work?

3D Secure helps prove that an individual making an online payment is the authenticated cardholder.

Before a payment can be made, the system authenticates the cardholder by diverting the cardholder to the browser of the bank that issued the card.

The bank will request a password or a One Time Password/PIN (OTP) from the cardholder, which is usually sent to their mobile phones via SMS or e-mail.

Why is 3D secure being implemented?

Online fraud.

According to the official South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC), Card Not Present (CNP) fraud consisting of e-commerce (online), m-commerce (mobile) and MOTO (mail order and telephone order) transactions contributed 48.7% of the total credit card fraud losses in 2013.
